How to get to Florence from Rome

The fastest and most comfortable way to get to Florence from Rome is by high-speed train. An alternative and, of course, less convenient is a regional train or, even more fun, a bus. We will consider all options.

We recommend to visit:

High-speed train in 1 hour 30 minutes

Cost: from up to 19 euros

High-speed trains travel 300 kilometers from Rome to Florence in just 1.5 hours. I recommend using this method only. It is quite convenient to go for a day to Florence just to take a walk, visit, for example, the Uffizi Gallery, have dinner in a delicious restaurant and return to Rome in the evening.

There are 2 railway carriers in Italy:

  1. Trenitalia.com - state campaign, see instructions on how to buy a ticket.
  2. Italotreno.it - private campaign, train level - super. See instructions here.

I use both of them, just compare where it is more profitable, but personally I prefer Italotreno. The main secret is to plan your trip and buy tickets as early as possible. Trains run at a speed of 250-300 km / h and travel to Florence without stopping.

  • Important: in Rome, high-speed trains leave from Termini or Roma Tiburtina (also a metro station), consider this moment when buying a ticket.

For example, in 1-2 months I can easily catch many options for 19 euros on Trenitalia.com:

When buying at the station or booking on the Internet for a couple of days, there will only be offers from 44 euros:

Similarly on Italotreno.it, in advance

And at the last moment:

Regional train in 4 hours

Cost: from 21.45 euros

Traveling on a regional train is a tougher and compromise option for travelers on a budget and time. Keep in mind that during the strikes of transporters, which happen regularly in Italy, it is regional trains that strike. Such a train runs from Rome to Florence for about 4 hours and costs constantly 21.45 euros, that is, it is not necessary to book a ticket in advance. You need to look at the schedule and buy tickets only on the official website of Trenitalia.com - all other sites are intermediaries and will take a commission.

Bus in about 4 hours

Cost: from 5 euros

A trip from Rome to Florence by bus is an option for the most economical, but nevertheless, the review would not be complete if this option were not mentioned. Travel time is about 3-4 hours.

We go to the official website to compare and search for bus tickets to Florence Omio.ru and see quite budget options for 5-9 euros.

My opinion: If you travel around Italy on a budget, then only comfortable FlixBus buses. A bus ticket from Rome to Florence usually (without shares) costs from 9.90 to 11.90 euros, there are sockets and free internet in the lounges.

Conclusion: high-speed train without options, the most comfortable way to get to Florence, especially when buying tickets in advance you travel even cheaper than on a regional train. Bus is an option for poor students and people of small stature who want to travel around Italy as cheaply as possible.

We invite you to share your experience of traveling to Florence in the comments. How did you get there?
