Riomaggiore

The unusually beautiful, bright and colorful town of Riomaggiore is conveniently located on the elevated rocky coast of the Ligurian coast caressed by the sun in the northwestern province of La Spezia, Italy, in the territory of the Cinque Terre National Park “Five Lands”.

The park is famous for its man-made terraces, five brightly colored, picturesque settlements sandwiched in high coastal cliffs, hundreds of hiking trails through the corners of wild and unspoiled nature.

One of them from Riomaggiore to the village of Manarola (Manarola) is the most famous and named very romantic Dear Love (Via dell'Amore). The park has many ancient castles, walls and fortifications. The Cinque Terre coast is replete with small, sometimes inaccessible and remote beaches.

What to see

The atmosphere of medieval antiquity is felt here on every winding narrow street and many stone stairs. The houses in the town were built on coastal cliffs breaking off to the sea and sheltered one above the other. The most ancient buildings and sections of the pavement date back to the 13th century.

The town of Riomaggiore is easy to distinguish by its unique flavor, where the colorful and vibrant facades of the buildings contrast with the emerald-turquoise sea and the unusually blue clear Mediterranean sky. Narrow streets smoothly and stairs rise up the steep slopes of the coast. Automobile traffic in such conditions is difficult and has long been simply prohibited.

Pleasant a walk in Riomaggiore should start with Via Colombo, right here on the main street of the town are famous restaurants, shops, souvenir shops and boutiques.

The chefs of the famous restaurants Il Particciolo, Da Billy and Marina Piccola delight guests of the town with classic Italian dishes, excellently prepared seafood and wonderful wines, the production technology of which winemakers have kept as the strictest secret for hundreds of years. Liquor "Sciacchetra" locally made this winemaking province of Italy is very popular with gourmets, it is produced simultaneously from different grape varieties, which gives the drink a unique bouquet.

During the invasion of the Saracens on the hill of Chericco, towering over Riomaggiore, the castle of the same name with the town of Castello di Riomaggiore was built.

This is a wonderful attraction of the Cinque Terre Park, it was laid by the Marquis of Turkotti in 1260, completed later, protective walls were erected here until the 16th century. Today the castle is a great tourist attraction, on excursions through which you can learn a lot about the history of the country. A fascinating and colorful Italy opens from the observation deck of the castle.

The Hills of the Cinque Terre - a truly fabulous and surprisingly beautiful place, hiking trails connect sights and towns here. The Azure Trail - the pearl of the Cinque Terre Park - leads tourists along the sea coast, the Love Trail connects Riomaggiore with Manarola, passes through a rocky and very picturesque area along the sea. The trails of Corniglia - Vernazza and Vernazza - Monterosso, each 4 km long, allow you to look around the area and enjoy the healing sea air.

Weather

The climate of Cinque Terre is mild and warm, with slight variations in temperature.. Mountains protect the area from the north winds. The Mediterranean Sea softens the winter season, the average temperature is 12 degrees. In summer, it reaches 30 degrees. Rains are short-lived, more often in the fall and in the spring. The best time to visit this part of the country is from March to the end of October.

You can swim in the beautiful blue water of the Mediterranean Sea from May.

Rocky outcrops, port marinas and sloping pebble beaches along the coastline invite you to bask in the sun or swim in clear water. The Cinque Terre Sea is characterized by the presence of many fish, beautiful dolphins and even whales.

How to get there

From the nearest airports and train stations in Genoa and Pisa depart trains to Riomaggiore Spices. From there, within 10 minutes by train, next to Riomaggiore, tourists arrive at their destination.

By car, rented in Genoa, it is not difficult to get to the Cinque Terre territory on your own, you should determine the location of Riomaggiore on the map and move to La Spezia, then 15 km along the promenade marked SS 370 according to the park signs.

Visiting the town mountain bike is a fantastic way for tourists who want to experience the uniqueness of this area. By sea it is easy to get to the place from the pier in Lerici and Portovenere.
